Changes are likely coming for Houston's system of grab and go bicycles, but a change from the BCycle system is unlikely, Metropolitan Transit Authority officials said, as they continue planning to absorb the system into their operations.
"A vendor switch is not feasible without incurring an estimated $8 to $10 million in swapping costs," said Jimmy Park, director of Metro's office of management and budget.
However, Park noted, the"current technology is very lagging," something Metro must address as it prepares to incorporate the bicycles and their drop-off points into its own operations. Since then, many users of the system have fretted for BCycle's short and long-term prospects in the area. Though driven largely by recreational trips, for some the bikes are a critical transportation link."This is going to be focused on Metro developing, operating, sustaining a regional bike share program that is part of our multi-modal services we deliver to the community," Metro CEO Tom Lambert said of the transition to operations plan for the bike system.
After growing to 153 stations, funding challenges led the nonprofit Houston Bike Share to constrict the system to its current level of 83 stations, mostly concentrated in downtown, Midtown and the Texas Medical Center. Since launching in 2013, Houston's bike sharing system has been the exclusive domain of BCycle, which supplies the kiosk, bicycles and equipment installed by the nonprofit, as they do in numerous cities., where bikes can be left practically anywhere in the area.
