After a local teenager was shot and killed during what is suspected to be the sale of illegal THC vape pen cartridges, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said it is concerned with increasing violence associated with the products.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar discusses an increasing trend of violence associated with THC vape pen cartridges. After a local teenager was shot and killed during the sale of illegal THC vape pen cartridges, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said it is concerned about increasing violence associated with the products.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said the death of 15-year-old Ted Johnson on Feb. 12 was the fifth shooting to stem from disputes over the THC cartridges that his department has investigated in recent months. Jose Medina, 19, is accused of fatally shooting Johnson while the 15-year-old was trying to buy THC cartridges from Medina. The two had met in the 500 block of Lucrezia for the sale when Medina shot Johnson multiple times, police said.Salazar said the shooting represented an alarming trend.

“Though THC vape pens may seem harmless and a victimless crime by many, the stats we are seeing Bexar County say otherwise,” Salazar said. “For such an affordable and readily available drug, young people seem to be willing to kill or be killed for this drug.” THC vape cartridges are illegal in the state of Texas, but Salazar said they are easily accessible to teens. The vape pens contain highly concentrated levels of THC, much higher than marijuana. If caught with a THC vape pen cartridge, individuals could face felony drug possession charges.“These can look like many different things, which is why it's important for parents to educate themselves and recognize these products,” he said.
