British Columbia's Forests Minister Ravi Parmar has announced a review of BC Timber Sales, the organization managing 20% of the province's annual allowable cut. The review aims to address challenges facing the forest industry, including declining allowable cuts, fiber access difficulties, and global economic conditions. Recommendations will focus on industry growth, diversification, reliable fiber access, First Nations partnerships, and job creation.

Amid Interfor's Que. exit, analyst Daryl Swetlishoff says this is just the beginning of closures and duty increases impacting the sector.

Forests Minister Ravi Parmar says in a statement that the review will ensure the sector can continue to evolve to overcome challenges and create a more resilient industry in the future. The statement says taking the action recognizes the pressures the forest sector is under from declining allowable annual cuts, difficulty accessing fibre, global economic conditions and heightened environmental and trade protections.

“Our work to get more value out of our forests is a top priority as we grow the B.C. wood-manufacturing sector,” Parmar says in the statement. “That’s why we are doubling the amount of volume that is dedicated to value-added manufacturers, from 10 per cent to 20 per cent. That’s about 1.1 million cubic metres in 2025 alone.”

The Upper Chum Creek Water Users Association, along with impacted farmers, filed legal action to halt the auction of four cut blocks in the Skimikin and Ptarmigan Hills. They argue that the proposed clearcutting, just 450 meters uphill from their farms, could have severe impacts on water quality and quantity. The farmers have been pushing for a hydrologic assessment of the logging's potential effects but say BCTS has refused.
