As draft looms, Baylor’s pond-crossing Jeremy Sochan prepared for NBA takeoff
In his lone year at Baylor, Jeremy Sochan averaged 9.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 blocks per game.The national TV broadcast hardly made note of Jeremy Sochan in the game’s opening moments.
Ivey was listed as La Lumiere’s player to watch. Then came mention of Eastern Kentucky commit Wendell Green Jr. And if you zoned out for a couple of seconds, you could miss the one-line Sochan evaluation that followed.After spending most of his life in Europe, Sochan didn’t begin to take the basketball world by storm until this past season at Baylor. The whispers and subtle notions about a high-level player were always there, though.
At 16 years old, Sochan tried his hand at the American youth basketball system when he joined La Lumiere. Playing against competition like Green was a big break for the raw prospect whose name hardly rang bells then. It was a break that ended prematurely. In 2020, Sochan revisited a German team called OrangeAcademy, which he’d gotten acquainted with a few years prior. He opted to play his final season with the club instead of returning to the American spotlight. Sochan signed with Baylor that fall.Had he wanted to, Sochan could have remained in Europe. He could have remained comfortable and carved out a draft profile closer to home.
