“It was kind of impulsive,” Jeremy Sochan said of dyeing his hair pink on Wednesday, a day before top-seeded Baylor turned 16th-seeded Norfolk State blue to the tune of an 85-49 rout in the tournament’s first round. “I wanted to surprise my teammates.” Baylor is trying to become the first team in 15 years to repeat as NCAA Tournament champions. One down and five to go, and any remaining games for the Bears likely won’t come as stress-free as their opener.
“ were playing in a zone, and my teammates were just whipping the ball around and finding me,” said Mayer, who described the victory as “a lot easier” than other contests in which he’s played well. “I didn’t really feel like I had to do too much — I just stood there and they found me.” Baylor is playing 90 miles from its campus, and thousands of fans either made the tidy drive from Waco or converged on Dickies Arena from their homes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
“So I told them when you walk out of here, walk out as a champion and hold your head high because we’ve done some great things.”
