A strong storm system from Alaska lashed the Bay Area with rain and powerful winds Saturday — dumping drenching downpours across the Santa Cruz Mountains and Diablo Range, while hammering the Sierra Nevada with white-out conditions and heavy snow.

“This is a pretty strong cold front,” said Brayden Murdock, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Monterey. “It’s not unheard of to see something packing this much of a punch in December. But there’s been plenty of rain.”
