The 2022 All East Championships, featuring baton twirlers from beginning to advanced levels, was held in Wildwood for the first time.
New Jersey State Individual and Team Championships as well as the New Jersey Miss Majorette Pageant.
“We were looking for a bigger venue because we want to grow this activity, so we’re setting precedence of what the activity should be,” said Demary Echandia. “The All East championships was a championship that was run many years ago, but then it transitioned into the Twirl Mania competition which is now held at Walt Disney World. So we revitalized all these championships along with the New Jersey Miss Majorette and the state championships all into one.
“And then we do what we call solo,” said Demary Echandia. “That’s where the girls really show us what they have.”, who captured the 2022 All East Strut and 2022 All East Twirling Champion titles, has been twirling since she was 2 years old alongside her cousin Brooklyn Bunish. The pair, both now 20 years old, have been traveling together to competitions since they can remember. “We’ve gone to Worlds together and we’re going to another one this year,” said Cates.
While on the road competing, there are often very few places where they can fully practice and throw all of their tricks due to low ceiling heights, so the only place to practice is outside. It’s not uncommon for people to do a double-take, or stop and watch, as it’s not every day you see this type of skill on display.
