Major League Baseball and the National Baseball Hall of Fame can do better to atone for the pain the sport has caused Indigenous peoples, who were direspected with racist mascots for more than a century, says columnist Nancy Kelsey.

In this column, Nancy Kelsey says Major League Baseball and the National Baseball Hall of Fame can do better to atone for the pain the sport has caused Indigenous peoples, who were direspected with racist mascots for more than a century. In this photo, about 100 people gathered outside Progressive Field on the Cleveland Indians home opener in 2020, to protest the use of the Indians name and logo. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Major League Baseball introduced a new pitch clock this year.

In fact, the museum does include some really important content recognizing the racism in baseball that led to the creation of Negro Leagues. There is also a wonderful tribute to the women of the sport and the struggles they faced joining men’s teams and leading to the creation of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.

I was not surprised to see the old and not so old dehumanizing imagery of Indigenous peoples immortalized on jerseys, caps and more. They played up to the classic stereotypes of Native people: the savage Indian, a grinning dolt and the noble warrior, among others. That is why it is absolutely ridiculous to claim that these images honor Native people. Any intent to honor Indigenous peoples with stereotypes rooted in racist mascots does not eclipse the harm they do.

While the museum, itself, is not owned and operated by the MLB, its complicity cannot be understated. The interconnectedness of the two signals how much influence one has over the other. And baseball must come to terms with its marred legacy with Indigenous peoples, if its recent efforts to be more inclusive are to be regarded as sincere.
