TheBatman actor Barry Keoghan teases his unique interpretation of the Joker: 'I already have a backstory that I’ve created in case it [The Batman 2] does happen — a totally fresh way of playing him.'

Barry Keoghan talks about his take on the Joker after appearing in a brief cameo at the end of this year's The Batman. Keoghan has had an exciting career over the last several years, with scene-stealing performances in films such as Yorgos Lanthimos' The Killing of a Sacred Deer and David Lowery's The Green Knight. He's even been able to extend his resumé into blockbuster hits such as Dunkirk and last year's MCU entry Eternals.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY After the critical and financial success of Matt Reeves' The Batman, fans have been clamoring for more information on how Keoghan will carry on his portrayal of the Joker after his introduction at the tail end of the film. While his sequence involving a brief discussion with Paul Dano's Edward Nashton behind bars at Arkham Asylum certainly made an impression, his face was mostly obscured, and no form of backstory was given on this interpretation of the Joker.

"It was intimidating, But if you stay true to yourself, that in itself is new. I know that sounds pretty lame, but I’m a big believer that if I’m myself, whatever I do is going to be completely fresh and unique. I already have a backstory that I’ve created in case it [The Batman 2] does happen — a totally fresh way of playing him."

What Could Make the Joker Different in The Batman 2? To be taking on the Joker at any time can be daunting as an actor, but coming hot off the heels of Joaquin Phoenix's Oscar-winning performance as Arthur Fleck in 2019's Joker has to be even more intimidating for even an actor as well-regarded as Keoghan. Furthermore, the shadow of Heath Ledger's timeless performance in The Dark Knight still looms large over the superhero genre to this day.

The backstory that Keoghan has crafted for his Joker could also go a long way in redefining the character for a new universe. Wherever Reeves and Keoghan take this character, there is already plenty of intrigue surrounding their plans. With The Batman having made over $767 million worldwide and various spinoffs in development, there will likely be plenty of opportunities to hopefully see this new Joker in action.
