Mark Ronson revealed in an interview that he was inspired to write "I'm Just Ken" after connecting with Ken and finding him to be a sympathetic character. Surprisingly, Barbie almost cut "I'm Just Ken", but director Greta Gerwig fought to keep tit in the movie. The song is integral to Ken's character as it giving him necessary depth and nuance; cutting out it would have meant removing Ken's most important scene in Barbie.
Barbie Would Have Benefited From More Songs Like "I'm Just Ken" While "I'm Just Ken" is great, Barbie would've benefited from more songs like it. Having just one song sung by one of the characters seems off. Including the dance party scene, Barbie could have seamlessly turned into a semi-musical and benefited by leaning into it with another song or two.
It would also have been good to give the Barbies of the Barbie movie their own song to balance things out. It's great that Stereotypical Ken got to sing about his perspective, but the Barbies also deserved their own song. Barbie is a film that celebrates feminism and the power of women, and the Barbies of the film should have had a signature song as well. Even if Stereotypical Barbie wasn't the one singing, perhaps one of the other Barbies could.
"I'm Just Ken" has enjoyed long-lasting popularity, including an equally memorable parody called "I'm Just Pete" performed by Pete Davidson on the Saturday Night Live season 49 premiere. It's clear that the song is now a cultural touchstone and continues to be beloved by audiences. A Barbie sequel has the chance to create even more iconic and entertaining songs in the future.
