Greg Abbott’s desk after the state Senate agreed on Wednesday to a final draft of the legislation.

“Here in Texas, we will protect our kids!” state Sen. Donna Campbell, a New Brauenfels Republican and the author of the bill,Abbott has not publicly commented on the legislation, but he has welcomed other measures focused on the LGBTQ community and authorized state officials last year to investigate families providing transgender care to their children for possible child abuse. His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Senate had already voted for the ban earlier this session, and was waiting for it to pass its biggest hurdle last week in a vote by the typically more moderate Texas House. It comes amid a flurry of anti-LGBTQ bills this session, including one approved by the House on Wednesday that wouldPuberty blockers and hormone therapy are common treatments for transgender youth and are supported by every major U.S. medical association. Surgeries are extremely rare.
