Incoming NSW Premier Chris Minns has declared Labor is “back and ready to govern” after clinching a historic victory and returning the party to power following 12 years in opposition.

Sky News Australia called the election for Mr Minns shortly after 8pm on Saturday delivering Labor its first victory in 12 years.

Picture: NCA NewsWire / David Swift “I can't say that every election campaign in the future will be conducted the same way but, from now on, no one will be able to say that it can't be.” Early polling suggested the election would be extremely tight and would likely end in a hung parliament.

“It is undeniably the case that today's election was also a decisive vote against privatisation,” he said. While Labor’s narrow policy agenda has been endorsed by the public, Mr Minns' refusal to join the Coalition in pledging to overhaul the state’s poker machines and gaming industry has been widely criticised.

Calling Labor's election victory shortly after 8pm, Chief Election Analyst Tom Connell said initial results showed the Liberal Party could only win a maximum of 40 seats.
