Selections from the oratorio surfaced two years ago as part of the Houston Symphony’s “A Baroque Christmas”; the smaller orchestras of the Baroque era turned out to be a perfect fit for the social-distancing stage requirements in effect at the time. Still, Bach Society Houston executive director Rick Erickson says he’s never heard of the complete work ever being performed in the Bayou City before — until now.

“There’s always something new with Bach,” says Erickson, who took over as executive director in 2013. “I also think that Bach speaks, whether it’s a new klezmer band or on the most passionately performed period instruments; or whether it’s sung by women and men, or boys, or whether it’s on the piano, or the clavichord, or the harpsichord, or the organ. I think Bach just always translates into whatever place one finds him.
