Ayala: Days are numbered for celebrated West Side mural, “Brighter Days”
The artwork, which reaches across the facade of a former mental health clinic, combines images of neurons and ganglia with richly wrought portraits of people. Garcia has said her aim was to “depict the struggle of the individual striving for mental health through his/her feelings, actions and thoughts.”The building’s new owners want to replace it with murals that, in their view, would better reflect the building’s new mission as the offices of Alonso & Alonso, an immigration law firm.
The New York-born Alonso said Garcia’s mural depicts just “a small percentage of the community,” those battling mental illness. As an Army veteran, he’s not indifferent to such struggles. But they’re not at the heart of his law firm’s work. In its vividly drawn figures, he sees the trauma and hardship endured by West Side families with ties to refugees from the Mexican Revolution. They escaped war, then faced poverty, discrimination, redlining and governmental negligence.
