KOTA KINABALU: The public should stay away from open spaces such as football fields when there is thunder and lightning to prevent any untoward incident, says state secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong.
Safar, who is also the state natural disaster management committee chairman, issued the reminder following the death of a 13-year-old boy who was struck by lightning when playing football in Papar on Tuesday.
The boy’s friend, who was also struck by the lightning, is in critical condition, Safar said in a statement. He said the current weather, which includes deafening thunder and lightning bolts, could strike a person in an open place, causing serious injury or perhaps death. “Refrain from being in open spaces during these weather conditions to prevent any tragedy,” Safar said.
