A fisherman off the coast of New Jersey reeled in an impressive blue fin tuna that was almost lost to the depths after a brush with a tugboat.

The pair reeled in anThe 112-inch, 718-pound bluefin tuna is the first trophy tuna caught off the Jersey coast this season and took four hours to reel in.
“It’s early for Tuna,” Goldberg said, “but we had lines in the water by 9 a.m.” Goldberg, who is a corporate attorney by day, also holds his captain’s license and a permit to catch and sell fish like tuna. He also charters his boat by word of mouth. The fish took about 500 yards of line off the reel at one point and over the hours battling the fish, Goldberg noticed a tugboat pulling a barge on the same heading as the Marener.
“As the tug got closer I got more and more nervous,” said Goldberg. “I leaned over to Mike and said ‘I can’t believe we’re going to lose this fish in this way.’” “I didn’t know just how big the fish was when we got it to the boat because it was facing downward and we couldn’t get it on the boat,” Goldberg explained.
Just how much a 700-pound blue fin tuna fetches at a dockside market is a little uncertain. It depends on the weight of the fish after it’s been prepared, the quality of the meat and what the market rate is for that species.
