'Avengers: Endgame' might be the last movie to break the opening weekend record at the box office

, but I wrote this before I saw the film last night . Barring a fluke, my review will drop when everyone else’s does in eight hours, so come back when 3:00 pm rolls around for that but of business. In the meantime, we’re all guessing about how much it will gross on opening weekend, both domestically and worldwide. Since China is opening along with the rest of the territories this time out , a new global debut record is all-but-guaranteed.
Domestic is less of a sure thing, even if the betting money suggests an over/under $270 million launch. That would breakAvengers: EndgameWe live in an era of ever-more fractured entertainment tastes, one where the biggest of big franchises are wrapping up with little of approximate scale to take their place. The filmed entertainment industry is as divided as the music and TV industries. I see little hope that new-to-cinema franchises can hope to match what Marvel pulled off.
