AvatarTheWayOfWater has been granted a rare theatrical extension in China, with the movie set to play for 30 more days. This will push the film's box office total even higher as James Cameron's sequel continues to break records.
Avatar: The Way of Water has been granted a longer theatrical release in China, extending the film past China's typical 30-day theatrical run policy. The first of many planned sequels to James Cameron's 2009 Avatar film, Avatar: The Way of Water has proven to be a box office behemoth, both domestically and overseas. At the time of writing, the film has earned over $1.7 billion worldwide, with $1 billion of these sales having been garnered internationally.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY According to Variety, government regulators in China have given Disney permission to screen Avatar: The Way of Water for an additional 30 days in theaters, on top of the 30 days it has already been on the big screen overseas. The decision comes after Avatar: The Way of Water topped China's weekly box office four weeks in a row. Avatar: The Way of Water is clearly a film that people are enjoying worldwide, in no small part because of its incredible special effects. Cameron utilized underwater motion capture to bring Pandora to life, the first time such technology has ever been used in film. In addition to its impressive computer-generated imagery, Avatar: The Way of Water tells a family-centric story that shows Jake Sully learning to fit into his role as a father while also acting as a coming of age story for his kids.
It's unclear where Avatar: The Way of Water's box office performance will take it compared to the first Avatar. As of now, Way of Water is the 7th highest-grossing film of all time, with its current box office performance indicating it won't stop there. If China has already extended the film's theatrical run, then it's likely other countries will follow suit in the coming weeks.
