Avatar almost had to cut flying scenes from the first movie. '[Fox] kept saying stuff like, ‘Well you can cut out all that flying stuff, we don’t need all that. That doesn’t advance the plot.’'

James Cameron says he nearly had to cut some of the best scenes from Avatar. The groundbreaking 2009 film Avatar utilized 3D technology in an innovative way, leading to its status as the highest-grossing movie of all time. With a simple plot and easy-to-grasp characters, the Cameron-directed sci-fi film's visuals and cutting-edge CGI technology took center stage and provided a unique and immersive experience.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY While speaking with TheWrap, Cameron discusses the pushback from critics and executives regarding scenes in the film that slow down and do not contribute to the direct plot. Referencing the production of the first Avatar movie, the director states that executives from 20th Century Fox urged him to cut a few of the flying sequences, which they deemed unnecessary.

“We got into a big conflict with the studio brass at Fox on the first film because they kept saying stuff like, ‘Well you can cut out all that flying stuff, we don’t need all that. That doesn’t advance the plot.’ I’m like, ‘You’re absolutely correct, it doesn’t advance the plot. It’s doing something completely else. It’s allowing people to enjoy the moment.

Avatar: The Way of Water Continues The Immersion As Cameron mentions, Avatar: The Way of Water placed just as much emphasis on lingering in the moment as its predecessor. Since Jake moved his family from the Omaticayan home in the forest to the islands comprising the Metkayina dwelling, plenty of time was allotted for establishing the vibrant oceans surrounding the Sullys' new home.

With three more sequels set to follow Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel movie could afford to take its time, with over three hours of runtime devoted to introducing Jake's family and their escape from Quaritch . Based on Cameron's words, plenty of thought went into Avatar: The Way of Water's balance of action and stillness in order to emulate the magic of the first movie.
