One of the most mocked aspects of 2009’s Avatar was the rock known as Unobtanium, though it actually is not as stupid as it initially sounds.
Undoubtedly one of the most mocked elements of Avatar was the name given to the film's valuable substance, unobtanium, though the concept is not actually as stupid as it sounds. While Avatar was incredibly well-received by critics and audiences upon its release in 2009, over time the film has had more criticism directed towards it.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT One of these elements is the rock named unobtanium which was missing from Avatar 2. The core premise of Avatar centers on the RDA traveling to Pandora in order to mine unobtanium as the element is incredibly valuable. However, the name unobtanium has garnered a lot of criticism as it sounds overwhelmingly on the nose for a rock that is difficult to obtain.
The term unobtanium has been used by aerospace engineers since the 1950s. As such, it is proven that James Cameron did not simply come up with a word for an unobtainable mineral but instead based it on real scientific fact. The fact that unobtanium is a real thing instantly makes the usage of the word in Avatar less laughable, despite sounding silly within the context of the film.
Avatar's Unobtanium Name Makes Perfect Sense As a result, Avatar's usage of the term makes perfect sense. Not only does the real-world usage of the word instantly make the unobtanium scene in Avatar less humorous, but it also makes a lot of sense within the context of the story. Given that unobtanium is a real word used for anything that is largely unavailable due to cost or rarity, the mineral from Pandora being coined as such fits brilliantly.
The mining operation on Pandora likely resulted in a lot of money being spent by the corporations on Earth in order to set up a home base on an entirely different planet. Even then, actually acquiring the mineral from the wilds of Pandora proved immensely difficult for the RDA. This difficulty to obtain and the rarity of the mineral only existing on a planet 4.37 light years away from Earth, makes the term unobtanium fit extremely well.
