James Cameron may be hoping for Avatar 3 to have the same success as the first two movies, but one other upcoming movie could be tough competition.

Avatar was a massive success in 2009, and over a decade later, Cameron began releasing sequels with a plan for five installments in total.
The original Avatar was the all-time box office champion before being knocked out of the number-one spot a decade after its release when Avengers: Endgame took over. However, about a year before Avatar 2's premiere, the first Avatar film returned to the number one spot where it has remained ever since. Because of the success of Avatar 2, Cameron has followed through with his plan to release three more sequels.
Avatar was not the only film released on December 18, 2009, but it was the only blockbuster. The same was true of the second Avatar in terms of competition. However, things will be different for Avatar 3. While the two releases may ultimately draw in drastically different audiences, if SpongeBob SquarePants's adoring fans show up on opening weekend, James Cameron's box office winning streak could be over.
The third SpongeBob feature, titled The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, was unfortunately released during the COVID-19 pandemic and made less money than the first two. However, it was still considered a success.
