Malaysia plans to deploy an automated camera system to identify and penalize overweight lorries, addressing a growing safety concern.

Overweight lorries pose a hazard to other motorists, described as a ticking time bomb. Current manual monitoring methods involve stopping suspected lorries and weighing them. However, an automated camera-based system, HS-WIM, will be operational by Q3 2025, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke. HS-WIM utilizes camera technology and sensors to detect overweight vehicles.

The system records the vehicle's time of passage, weight, and whether it exceeds the limit, enabling authorities to issue fines. The Transport Ministry has earmarked 10 locations nationwide for HS-WIM installation, prioritizing accident-prone areas, high-traffic zones, and enforcement hotspots. Statistics reveal that 825 lorries were involved in fatal crashes between January and October 2024, resulting in 5,364 deaths
