Screens, social media and information technology may be seen as competition for the written word, but authors are increasingly using it to their benefit.

"I still struggle with reading and writing but they've really helped me get better at being able to do those things," Mr Oates said.

He says podcasts are another way authors can promote and share their books, and get young people interested in the writing process. "Teachers and librarians are saying that upper primary [students are] much harder to engage in reading, whereas it used to be more in high school that it was challenging," he said."I think the pandemic and the prevalence of technology has made that happen.An Australian actor-turned-children's author, Mr Bancks has also leaned into using book trailers for his novels, making mini stories based on the events in his stories.
