The Australian Republic Movement has urged Charles to celebrate Australia’s journey towards independence, before calling for an apology for the “systemic racism, oppression and Crown-sponsored attempted genocide” of First Nations peoples.
The letter, signed by co-chairs Nova Peris and Craig Foster, also comes after reports that Charles has reservations about visiting Australia.
It begins by informing Charles that Australia is planning on developing a relationship of equals soon instead of “master and servants”, before adding that the ARM will not be pledging allegiance on Saturday. The ARM goes on to say that by asking First Nations people and the descendants of slaves to pledge allegiance “indicates that you have not yet begun to fully comprehend the legacies of your Crown”.
“And one that should be a triumphal celebration of all our 65,000 years of history, our British traditions and our contemporary, diverse demography of which we are so deeply proud.”
