I am a writer, journalist, professor, systems modeler, computational and digital health expert, avocado-eater, and entrepreneur, not always in that order.Smoke haze from unprecendented bushfires hover over the Rod Laver Arena ahead of the Australian Openin Melbourne on January 14, 2020. Soaring pollution halted Australian Open practice and delayed qualifying on January 14 as smoke from raging bushfires hit the build-up to the season's opening Grand Slam.
during 2020 Australian Open Qualifying at Melbourne Park on January 14, 2020 in Melbourne, Australia. Downtown Melbourne itself is not having wildfires, but the resulting smoke shows just how substantial the bushfires have been. Fires have been engulfing many parts of Australia since late July last year. New South Wales has been hardest hit, with over 3,000 homes already damaged or destroyed.
The smoke already has made its way to other countries. For example, orange may be the new black but it was also the color of the sky from the smoke in this picture from Auckland, New Zealand:... [+] Where there is smoke, there are various vapors, including potentially toxic ones, and small particulate matter. Such matter is less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter and typically can’t be seen by the naked eye, or the fully dressed eye for that matter. Therefore, even if the air appears clear, small particulate matter could still be floating in it. In fact, without testing and monitoring, there can be no real warning that air quality is unhealthy. Silent but deadly doesn’t just apply to farts.
You don’t have to inhale particulate matter for too long to begin experiencing negative effects. Consider what may happen if the exposure is much longer, such as over weeks, months, and even years. Constantly breathing junk into your lungs shouldn’t be on anyone’s list of health tips for the New Year. The result may be more lasting damage and changes to the cells in your respiratory tract.
