The Australian Open will run for an extra day next year with the tennis tournament set to start on a Sunday in 2024.

The Australian Open will start on a Sunday next year, with the tennis tournament to run a day longer after players raised concerns aboutTournament director Craig Tiley said a Sunday start – making the Open a 15-day event for the first time – would help alleviate the pressure of late-night finishes for competitors and spectators.Joe Armao

The Sunday start will increase the number of Australian Open sessions in the tournament’s three arenas, Rod Laver, Margaret Court and John Cain, from 47 to 52.“The first round will now be played over three days instead of two, also giving fans an extra day of unbelievable tennis, entertainment, food and family fun,” Tiley said.

“This is another opportunity to grow what is already the biggest annual sporting event in the world in January,” Tiley said. “If you get an epic men’s five-setter during the day, it rolls into the night sessions, and that will be the tipping point for rolling into the early hours of the morning,” he said. “You will still get one or two, that is par for the course, but you are not looking at the 4am-ers.”
