Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka has taken a step back from some media duties for her mental health after feeling unsafe during a press conference at the French Open. 7NEWS
The 25-year-old was also asked questions about Russia’s war after her first-round win over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk, who refused to shake her hand and was booed off court.
“These questions do not bother me after my matches. I know that I have to provide answers to the media on things not related to my tennis or my matches but, on Wednesday, I did not feel safe in the press conference. In her on-court interview with seven-time grand slam champion Mats Wilander, Sabalenka expressed her relief at getting by Stephens in the first women’s night match of the tournament.
