BREAKING: Kim Birrell has joined fellow Queensland wildcard Olivia Gadecki in the Australian Open’s second round after being a game from defeat in the second set.
Play has been brought to a halt on the outside courts due to extreme heat as Melbourne swelters through a 36-degree day.
Understandably, Australia’s Jordan Thompson wasn’t too happy about the development after going up a break in the second set against America’s JJ Wolf 3-6, 3-1. “This means play continues until the end of an even number of games or the completion of a tie-break,” organisers tweeted.LoadingAustralia’s Jordan Thompson has lost the first set to America’s JJ Wolf 6-3 on show court three.
Dimitrov will play the winner of Belgian qualifier Zizou Bergs and Slovakia’s Laslo Dere in the second round.Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev has breezed past 2020 finalist Dominic Thiem to make the second round despite struggling in Melbourne’s stifling heat in the latter stages. Thiem is ranked No.98 after being as high as No.3 as he makes his way back from a serious wrist injury.
“First of all, I am happy I was able to win in straight sets [because] when you see you have to play against Dominic, it’s never easy,” Rublev said on court.
