An Australian tourist was arrested and jailed in Singapore after threatening to crash a plane due to visa complications that prevented him from entering Thailand and returning to Australia.
An Australian man's holiday plans took a drastic turn when he was barred from entering Thailand due to a torn visa page in his passport. Marli Curtis Philip Moncrieff, 36, was initially denied entry into Thailand on November 20, 2024, and subsequently returned to Singapore. However, he faced further complications as he was also denied entry into Singapore for the same reason. Moncrieff was then escorted to an aerobridge at Changi Airport to board a Jetstar flight back to Perth.
\During this process, Moncrieff became increasingly agitated and threatened to crash the aircraft if placed on another flight. He made these threats to his girlfriend who was traveling with him. Fearing for the safety of the passengers and crew, the airline personnel removed Moncrieff from the flight as a precaution. \ Singaporean authorities intervened and took Moncrieff into custody. He was questioned and subsequently arrested for making threats to aviation security. On January 15, 2025, Moncrieff pleaded guilty to a charge of harassment and was sentenced to eight weeks in jail. Principal District Judge Toh Han Li emphasized the seriousness of Moncrieff's threats, stating that words can have severe consequences, especially when they pertain to aviation security
