Health officials are on alert as a potentially fatal bacterial illness, which has claimed the lives of 30 children in the UK, spreads in Australia. 7NEWS

While severe infections are unusual, there has been an uptick in the UK and Europe over the past few months. “Strep infections are really common, particularly in childhood, and probably somewhere between 10 per cent and 25 per cent of children each year will have a step A sore throat,” he told 7NEWS.com.au.
VIC recorded at least three deaths from invasive streptococcal infections or toxic shock syndrome last year.Strep A warning signs If mild strep A infections are not treated, a child can develop serious complications such as rheumatic fever, which can affect the heart, and kidney disease . “There’s nothing particularly specific about strep infections, and so those warning signs about your child being unwell - things like being very lethargic, not eating, pain in the limbs ... a child looking very pale,” he said.
