Daniel Andrews also announces redevelopment of 44 public housing towers and more renter protections
Australia’s first widespread levy on short-stay accommodation and the redevelopment of 44 monolithic public housing towers have been announced by the Victorian government as part of an overhaul of policy.and Stayz, announced by the premier, Daniel Andrews on Wednesday, is expected to raise about $70m annually to fund social and affordable housing.
The statement also includes an ambitious plan to redevelop the Melbourne’s public housing towers, which were designed and built post-second world war and have provided the backbone to Victoria’s public housing system for the past 60 years.Andrews said the ageing towers no longer meet the standards Victorians have come to expect.
“In what is undoubtedly the biggest urban renewal project in our state’s history – and potentially our nation’s history – all 44 of those towers will go, they will be replaced by 2051.”
