Five Canberra police officers involved in the abandoned prosecution of former Liberal staffer Bruce Lehrmann have dropped their Federal Court defamation action against former ACT Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold.

Five Australian Federal Police officers have dropped their case against former Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold .

Five Canberra police officers have dropped their case to sue the ACT's former top prosecutor Shane Drumgold for defamation. Mr Lehrmann's trial over the alleged rape was ultimately abandoned after a juror's misconduct, leaving no findings against him.But before the retrial was abandoned, Mr Drumgold wrote to the ACT's then-Chief Police Officer Neil Gaughan, suggesting he had been pressured by police not to charge Mr Lehrmann, and calling for a public inquiry.

An inquiry led by former Queensland judge Walter Sofronoff found Mr Drumgold had "knowingly lied" and made "wholly false allegations".During the inquiry, each of the AFP officers was required to give at least a written statement to the inquiry, with several appearing in person., which also targeted the ACT government, that the more attention that was drawn to the letter, the more likely the threat of serious harm to their reputations was.
