Ahead of early voting opening, Julia Gillard, who turns 62 on Friday told a London expat audience about what an Aboriginal woman her age would have experienced.

Former prime minister Julia Gillard has urged a large contingent of expat Australians to make their vote count at next month’s referendum, saying an Indigenous Voice to Parliament enshrined in the constitution would ensure future generations listen to those who have suffered from a century of policies imposed on them.

Gillard, the chair of mental health advocacy group Beyond Blue since 2017, said an Indigenous woman born in the same year as her would have been at risk of being part of the Stolen Generations. “And even if she hadn’t been removed from her family, it’s quite likely that across her extended family, there were people who had that experience and intergenerational trauma.”

Voters in the referendum will be asked a question about recognising Indigenous people in the country’s constitution, in what Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has called a “once in a generation chance” to improve the lives of the country’s Aboriginal population. It requires the majority of Australians and the majority of states to vote in favour of the change, which includes the establishment of a Voice to parliament, an advisory body on Indigenous affairs.

His criticisms come ahead of the referendum on October 14. Mr Mundine pointed to one example that Indigenous Australians don’t currently have a voice when it comes to making laws and policies. “It’s the opposite,” he said during a National Press Club conference on Tuesday. “Hundreds of organisations are immersed in policy-making affecting Indigenous Australians. “Corporations, sporting codes, religious groups, unions, every arm of local, state, territory and federal governments, every agency and bureaucracy have Indigenous advisory bodies or other formal consultations.”
