A former Australian Antarctic Division researcher says stress from funding uncertainty made it "too hard to do science" at the agency anymore, revealing to senators that she quit due to advice from her dentist. "You go through the process of getting a project approved … but every year you have to ask logistics for funding."Another former AAD scientist, Andrew Davidson, recounted how frequent staff turnovers at the division had left him "shattered".

The savings and associated review of the upcoming research season were necessary, she said, in order to correct for an overspend the previous year. The vessel was refused permission by TasPorts to pass under the Tasman Bridge due to the "high risk" it posed to the structure. Ms Campbell said she was "closely engaged" with the Department of State Growth to find a solution to the problem.
