Scientists have undertaken seven voyages totalling more than 100,000 kilometres and eight months at sea to build the most up-to-date snapshot of Antarctic blue whale distribution.

Researchers have been using audio devices to try and gauge the distribution of Antarctic blue whales. They might be the largest animal on the planet but Antarctic blue whales are remarkably tricky to find.

"The Southern Ocean is such a big place that blue whales are just not encountered that often from ships."Antarctic blue whales are the largest subspecies of blue whale. They can grow as long as three buses end to end and weigh as much as a Boeing 787 plane. They do not how many there are, or whether there are more now than there were 20 years ago.

So far, they have collaborated with photographers and visual observers, and geneticists who take biopsy samples of living whales."Things like drones, artificial intelligence, and machine learning are really promising upcoming technologies that should allow us to really wring the most out of these amazing datasets that we've managed to collect," he said."We found that these animals do retain their traditional Southern Ocean forging grounds.

That could disrupt the relationship the largest animal in the ocean has with one of the smallest — krill. They grow to about six centimetres long, and while small, are one of the most abundant species on the planet.Dr Vanessa Pirotta is a wildlife scientist from Macquarie University. She was not involved in the study, but says krill are highly vulnerable to changes in the environment.

But in another seven, the proportion of listening stations that had detections was higher in recent years."That's suggesting that the trend is either neutral or going up over time, so that's really good news," Dr Miller said. Hundreds of patients died after catching COVID in hospital, and experts say their deaths were preventable
