The federal government has announced Australia will stop live sheep exports by 2028, pledging more than $100 million to help support farmers and producers ahead of the major transition.
The federal government has announced Australia will ban the export of live sheep by 2028, which the Coalition warns will have"enormous consequences" for the agriculture industry and local jobs.
"At the last two elections, Labor made a commitment to phase out the export of live sheep after years of community concern about the trade," he told reporters in Perth. Mr Watt said the industry will receive a $107 million funding boost over five years to prepare the supply chain for the phase out. "This plan also delivers certainty for farmers with a firm end date and a significant amount of taxpayers' funding to assist their transition and develop new markets. The ban will not apply to live sheep exports by air or other livestock trade industries, like cattle.Speaking to Sky News Australia on Saturday, Nationals Leader David Littleproud slammed the government's decision to shut down the trade by 2028.
"This ideology of thinking that we've done this for animal welfare standards is perverse and shows any lack of understanding this government has of the live sheep industry."Federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton warned stopping the livestock export will have"enormous consequences" for Australian agriculture and jobs.
RSPCA Australia CEO Richard Mussell welcomed the announcement, saying a"swift an orderly phase out" of the trade, along with measures safeguarding animal welfare, was the"right decision" for Aussie sheep and farmers.
