Australia has slapped tough new sanctions on Iranian police and state media following the death of a young woman which triggered global outcry over the countries’ oppressive regime.

Nearly one year after the death of Mahsa “Jina” Amini, the Albanese government has unveiled new sanctions and travel bans to target “those who oppress women and girls in Iran”.

Amini, 22, was on a visit with her family to the Iranian capital when she was detained on September 13 by the police unit responsible for enforcing Iran's strict dress code for women. Picture: Ozan Kose/AFP Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the government will “continue to take decisive and targeted action to hold Iran to account for its egregious human rights violations.” .

At least 500 people have died since demonstrations erupted across Iran last year, which has seen the longest anti-government protests since the 1979 revolution.
