The ACT government allows the free service to operate until at least August after a study finds it is encouraging illicit drug users to be safer.
Canberra's confidential pill-testing service, which allows people to check what substances are in the illicit drugs they buy, has been extended.About 21 per cent of drugs checked have not been what users expectedThe free service — the only one of its type in Australia —The ACT government will now allow it to continue operating until at least August.
"The ACT government does not support or condone illicit drug use, and our advice to the community will always be to not take drugs," Ms Stephen-Smith said."Drug checking, alongside expert advice and brief health interventions, can reduce the harms associated with drug use, especially for people who may have limited drug-taking experience."Most clients have not previously discussed their drug use with health professionals.
Two-thirds of the people who used CanTEST were under the age of 35, and almost all were from Canberra.
