The Moore Report points Australian businesses in the right direction towards South-East Asia, but will they take the bait?
Consider these two prime ministerial pronouncements.Anthony Albanese with Foreign Minister Penny Wong with special envoy for South-East Asia Nicholas Moore.“I believe the ground is now laid for increased Australian investment in South-East Asia,” he said.
Spotting the difference? The first is Gough Whitlam in 1974 after a swing through regional capitals, the second Anthony Albanese just over 10 days ago, launching former Macquarie Bank chief executiveBut in that long arc from Whitlam to Albanese lies a central question for Australian diplomacy.The region’s modernising economies, rapidly urbanising populations and growing middle-class prosperity should provide a relatively straightforward case for greater complementarity.
Moore’s report points in the right direction. And it complements one half of the national security rhetoric Albanese and Wong have been using about ASEAN centrality and listening to, not lecturing, South-East Asian capitals. It is critical to the potential of these national economies that they continue to participate in regional and global markets too.
