Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced today that the funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East will be reinstated following advice from security agencies and measures from the aid body to ensure taxpayer dollars are used appropriately.
"We welcome the decisive actions from UNRWA and the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to strengthen the integrity of operations. According to the latest death toll, more than 31,000 Gazans have been killed in Israel's retaliatory assault on the enclave, while the UN says one of every six infants and babies in the territory are severely malnourished or wasting away.
Wong also announced Australia will increase aid to the region, including 140 aid delivery parachutes to help support be air dropped into Gaza, $4 million to UNICEF and a further $2 million to the UN's humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza.
