Australia’s latest COVID-19 wave is fading, but with successive omicron outbreaks now leaving the nation with higher fatality rates than its peers.

The latest omicron wave has peaked at about two-thirds of last year’s winter wave, with all jurisdictions now reporting significant falls in hospitalisation and acute ICU cases.

Australia finished the year with a cumulative COVID-19 mortality rate of 560 deaths per million across the year, based on surveillance data reported by health agencies.This was more than 3½ times Singapore , a country that Australian health authorities have benchmarked against, according toJapan , New Zealand , Canada , the United Kingdom and South Korea all recorded lower per capita cumulative COVID-19 mortality rates for 2022 than Australia.
