Pope Francis will visit Port Moresby and Vanimo on the remote north coast from Sept. 6-9, with more than 40,000 people expected in the capital city. Authorities in PNG have beefed up security ahead of the pontiff’s arrival on Sept. 6 for their country’s leg of a 12-day trip that also takes inThe Australian travel warning added that kidnappings can happen with “criminal motives,” noting “there have been incidents of kidnapping in remote areas and near some mining sites. Targets have included foreigners.”

Travelers were also urged to consider using private security and to be wary of criminal groups that operate in remote areas, particularly in the Highlands—where they have been advised to reconsider all travel to Mt Hagen—across provincial borders and in areas around logging, oil, and gas sites.
