The long wait for the nation’s first “AUKUS” class boat increases the likelihood Australia may need to buy more US-made submarines, experts say.

alliance until at least 2040, as the government prepares an immediate billion-dollar injection into US and UK shipyards to begin the task of training Australian workers.

Ahead of the announcement, Mr Albanese and Mr Sunak held bilateral talks on Sunday , with the two leaders staging a photo op sipping – ironically, given AUKUS’ origins – bottled French water at a seafood restaurant in front of bewildered diners. “And I think that the co-operation we’ve had is really exciting. We see that this is an investment in our capability. But at the same time, of course, we’re investing in our relationships in the region as well. And I’ve beenn as well, explaining our position, and it’s been well received and understood why we’re doing this.”

In briefings last week, US officials said Australia had committed to a “proportional” investment in building up the US and UK industrial bases.has calculated that over a five-year period, based on US shipyards building 10 boats and Australia receiving one every two years, a 25 per cent proportion would cost Australia $US1.15 billion.

Defence industry sources said work on designing the Adelaide shipyard to accommodate construction of the much larger and complex submarines needed to be finalised within the next 12 months, and it would take three years for the yard to be ready. At the same time, the UK needs to finalise the design for the new submarine, a process that will take several years at least.
