In years past, reporting someone in mental crisis might have involved a call to 911 and a visit from police. But since June of last year, getting mental help has become as easy as dialing 988.

But since June of last year, getting mental help has become as easy as dialing 988.is now a year old and the local affiliate is getting national attention for getting mental help to people faster while taking a load off other first responders.

Here in Austin, calls to 988 from Travis County and a large chunk of Texas are routed to a call center in South Austin, and their call volume is on the rise. Yashi Duhon is a qualified mental health supervisor at the local 988 center. She says, “I think everybody needs support. There's a lot going on. People are feeling overwhelmed. And this gives them a safe space to be able to tell people 'I'm not ok right now and I need support.' And we're able to provide them with support."

And the vital help a person needs in a time of crisis can come quicker than you think. Dawn Handley is chief operations officer ofwhich operates the Austin 988 Lifeline call center. She states, “When someone dials 988 from one of the 76 counties that Integral Care supports, they'll get a member of our team. And last year 97% of the calls that we did take from 988 we actually were able to resolve on the phone with the caller at that time.
