Australian surfer Laura Enever has officially been recognised as the world record holder for the biggest wave paddled onto and surfed by a woman.
Sydney's Laura Enever paddled onto an enormous 13.3 metre wave back in January but has finally been recognised as the World Record holder for the feat.
“This wasn’t even a part of the plan it was just go out and survive really and I got in position for the wave after two hours of cat and mouse around the line-up trying not to get dumped by one of those or have it break on top of my head and blow my board to pieces,” she said. “I couldn’t believe it, I told my friends I was like ‘I got the biggest wave of my life’ and a few days later they were like ‘what the hell! You didn’t say it was that big’.”
“I’ve had the Guinness World Record books, I’ve opened them up for Christmas many, many times from Santa and me and my brother love flicking through them, it’s a pinch me moment.” Many big wave surfers use jet skis to tow them onto enormous waves standing up and at speed but paddling onto a huge wave adds another degree of bravery and difficulty.
“My 12-year-old self is going, ‘what the hell happened along the way’ but I always loved big waves since I was young and me and my brother would be so competitive so we would always push each other to go out when we were young,” Enever said.
