The Aussie running star only has patchy memories of the chaotic major championship, but has recalled what she can of carnage in Bathurst. 😧 It's a frightening insight. 😳 9WWOS Athletics
A scorching Bathurst day and the toughest course in the event's history claimed another victim when Pompeani, sitting in 17th, collapsed with about 20 metres to go, stumbled back to her feet and wobbled to the finish line in 22nd, before crashing to the ground again.
"I did do a bit of research after about heatstroke, more so for the comeback. I wanted to know if running hard after heatstroke is good or bad. Essentially the longer you are at a high temperature there's more of a chance of organs getting damaged and failing, so they were pretty firm with me. "When I was in the ice bath ... I realised I couldn't remember finishing, so I was asking if I finished the race and they said, 'Yeah, you finished'. That's when I thought, 'Oh, well I'd love to see how I finished because I don't know what happened'."
She's also the third-fastest Australian woman over 10 kilometres on the road in history, having clocked 31:43 in Sydney last year. "I know a lot of people have sort of implied that they think I went out too hard and was sort of overreaching, but during the race I didn't feel at all like I was overreaching," Pompeani said.
