The biggest news in the Alameda Unified School District this week is that the district’s Board of Education is accepting applications for the remaining term of the seat left vacant when board Vice President Megan Sweet resigned.Sweet has been on the board since 2020 and was serving as vice president this year. She announced her resignation at the Oct. 24 board meeting and officially submitted it Oct. 26.
Each applicant for the seat must be at least 18, live in Alameda and be a registered California voter. The application is available online atore sent through regular mail to: Heather Little, AUSD Board of Education president, c/o Pasquale Scuderi, AUSD Superintendent, Alameda Unified School District, 2060 Challenger Drive, Alameda, CA 94501.
Hard copies of applications are also available at the front desk of the district’s office at 2060 Challenger Drive in Alameda. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Dec. 6. District staff will review all applications to make sure applicants meet the minimum legal qualifications. Board members will interview the applicants and select one to appoint at the board’s public meeting in mid- to late- December. The board will make a provisional appointment at a special meeting later in December.In student news, Alameda High School and Encinal Junior and Senior High School are putting on their fall plays over the next several weeks. The Encinal Drama Club will present the play “Clue,” written by Sandy Rustin and based on the Hasbro board game and movie, at 7 p.m. Dec.
Alameda High’s play, “The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940,” opens at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Fred L. Chacon Little Theatre, with additional shows on at 7 p.m. Nov. 11, 17 and 18 and 2 p.m. Nov. 12.
