The grant will support Aurora’s Urban Forest project, which involves the planting of trees around the city.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, announced the award Friday through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program.Made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congress last year, the funding is designed to provide direct federal support to local communities for urban tree-planting and management.
Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin said Aurorans have “a million reasons to be excited about this news and the future of forestry in Aurora.” The city recently received a $24,658 grant from the Morton Arboretum as part of the 2023 Chicago Region Earmark Urban and Community Forestry Support Program. It was part of the Chicago Region Grant Program. The city added another $8,261 as a 25% match to the grant. The grant was targeted for 34 new trees downtown and extensive pruning on existing trees.
