Chinese Ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian says the AUKUS nuclear submarines are an “unnecessary consumption” of the hard-working Australian taxpayers’ money.

“I think the AUKUS itself is not a good idea, and a nuclear submarine is even a worse one,” he said during a media conference on Thursday.

“On those number of so-called conventional nuclear submarines, it’s not going to serve the purpose of protecting national security; it’s going to consume a tremendous number of your money. “Secondly, the submarine project is risky in the sense that it’s going to set a bad example for other countries to follow suit.”
