Offers from SEC schools, including Auburn, are starting to roll in for Saraland High quarterback KJ Lacey after his impressive performance in the state playoffs.
“I’m really excited for him,” Saraland head coach Jeff Kelly said. “I just continue to be impressed with how he led our offense and how he continued to make plays. About mid-year, it became apparent that this young man had special qualities that can lead to a very bright future.”, Lacey has received his first three SEC offers from South Carolina, Ole Miss and Auburn. He went 12-of-21 against Mountain Brook for 130 yards and a touchdown to fellow sophomore and Alabama commit Ryan Williams.
“The guy is not only extremely talented and can make all the throws, but the big intangible with him is how he not only competes but handles the clutch moments in the game,” Kelly said. “That is off the chart. I really think he is just scratching the surface of how good he can be.” For the season, Lacey completed 64 percent of his passes for 3,177 yards and 40 touchdowns. He was intercepted just 5 times. The Spartans went 14-1 and won the school’s first state football title.
“He is a young man driven to be great every day,” Kelly said. “He doesn’t get caught up in everything going on around him. He focuses on playing ball and being the best he can be. KJ has been very consistent in terms of his daily approach. He’s wired in a way that he will work the grind to get better every day.”
Kelly said he and his coaches along with quarterback coach David Morris have been part of ongoing conversations with colleges.
